Before writing this blog post, I tried to write about 5 different other topics. Each time I started to write one of these posts I just couldn’t finish it. Not a single one. I’m totally aware of what I was trying to do. I wanted to cheer myself up. I wanted to find something that lightens up my mood. But nope… it doesn’t work like that. Sometimes it might, but not this time.
After the fifth topic and a bunch of bitter tears later, I caught myself thinking: “Damn it! I’m sad right now. Why should I not just write about that?” – And Ta-da! ~ It worked, as you can see…
When I was younger I was sad and depressed for years. Over and over again. I didn’t like my body, I hated school, work or whatever I was doing at that time and I had no idea what to do with my life. I was just not happy.
In order for me to get happier, I changed a few things, worked out, got to know new people… etc. But I still did a lot of things I didn’t like – just because I kinda “had to”.
Now after years of work on myself and several experiences I had in my life, I became a much more positive person. But still, sad days – like this one today – happen from time to time.
Let me share with you 7 things to do when you are sad. This is what helped me today especially:
1. Talk to a person you love…
… a person that makes you laugh.
… a person you feel comfortable around.
For some, it might even be enough to see the face of a person you like. Soak it all in: The smile of that person, the way he/she looks at you, the fact that this person is here with you. Breath in and be still for a while. Doesn’t it feel nice?
2. Move your body
Go for a walk in nature, workout. Do whatever feels comfortable for you, but move! Yes, there might be minutes you just want to lie on your bed, shed tears and feel how much it hurts in your heart, but don’t forget that there is also a time to take action. Be sad, and then kick ass!
3. Drink a hot beverage
Well, I have been sick for the past couple of days so I did this anyway. But today much more than the other days… As soon as I felt like crying again, I made myself a nice cup of tea. The thing is, I don’t even like tea that much. I drink it when I’m sick, but the warmth of it is kind of comforting. Not only for the throat.
4. Take a nap or go to sleep early
Don’t fight with your emotions until it’s midnight. If you don’t feel like it, just go to sleep and shut your thoughts down. Tomorrow will be a much brighter day for sure.
Someone taught me once not to repress. So cry, definitely cry! Don’t hold it back. Crying releases pain.
When you cry, you should definitely try to laugh a bit as well. Laughing heals and releases tension. Watch a funny clip or a movie. Read something that makes you smile. Maybe you find this funny… no? Some funny cat pictures anyone? Come on! It’s the internet after all!
You see… some things are so easy, they can be explained in just one word. Here’s another one. So, breathe deeply. You can even find some breathing exercises on YouTube. They work wonders.
Tell me if something helped you on this list. Also let me know when you have some other suggestions. Lots of love
