Should we fight for what’s right or better keep our mouths shut? Will we have a future on this planet if we keep on living in cozy unicorn-land or do we need to open our eyes to the truth and undergo radical changes? You decide, but keep on reading first.
So right now there’s a fight going on in the Vegan Community on YouTube and two opposing camps are forming. Freelee the Banana Girl once again openly called out another big YouTuber – Blogilates – and confronted her by saying that the lifestyle she teaches is unhealthy and unethical.
This approach, to directly address influential people, is pretty common among vegan YouTubers. The general idea behind this is to educate people with a huge following and to try to open their eyes in order to prevent them from advertising more animal abuse and an unhealthy lifestyle among thousands or even millions of followers.
Carli Bybel, a very famous beauty and lifestyle YouTuber with more than 4 million subscribers is proof that these educational videos can be pretty effective since she recently went vegan in reaction to two of these videos.
Cassey Ho, the founder of Blogilates though, does not seem to understand this concept. Instead of an appropriate reaction, all that these Vegan YouTubers get are take down notices to silence them.
Now, why is that bad?
It’s bad because this reaction combines several reasons why our world is so fucked up in the first place.
The Perfect Image
Media tries to be full of perfection: You have to look a certain way, be happy and positive 24/7 and of course you should be sparkling and full of energy all the time. We see the fake polished lives of others and we also want to be surrounded by expensive furniture, want to wear luxurious clothing and have flawless hair and make-up.
We basically want to live in unicorn-land. It’s so much more convenient and nobody will ever criticize us, because we’re simply perfect. That’s the dream right? The dream that we try to live day in day out, but we can never really fully achieve it, because the truth is – cling on tight – the world isn’t perfect. It’s full of lies, crime, war, diseases and violence. It might not fit in the “perfect polished lives” of some people, but these issues are important and I’m sorry, but we have to talk about them.
Shutting Our Eyes From The Truth
There is nothing ugly or imperfect in unicorn-land, but since the world with its human disease can never achieve that ultimate state of perfection, we have to make use of our shiny unicorn-land-glasses. They will reliably shut your eyes from the truth and you can keep on going to live the life you’ve always wanted. Isn’t that great? Hell yeah!
But shutting your eyes from the truth will never change anything. The same things that are fucked up at the moment will be as fucked up – or even worse – in the future if we don’t get our shit together NOW.
No Freedom Of Speech
Okay I have to admit, our shiny unicorn-land-glasses come with some imperfections. We do not only want to shut our eyes from the truth, but also our ears. So everybody, take these sound proof unicorn-land-ear-plugs and you can be sure that you’ll only hear what YOU want to hear. It will benefit your good night’s sleep and prevent you from having these ugly unwanted dark circles under your eyes.
The sad truth about these “ear-plugs” is, that in reality they are nothing else than taking away the freedom of speech of YouTubers like Freelee or Vegan Gains. By making them delete their videos Cassey Ho is not only destroying the hard work that these people put into their videos, but she also prevents others of hearing these educational messages.
Freedom of speech is one of the most important rights we have. Who wants to live in a world where you can only think, believe, hear and see what OTHERS tell you? We’re lucky that we can make up our own mind on things – at least to a certain extend – and we should definitely not repeat the mistakes that others did before us.
Throwing Away YouTube’s Potential
Remember the times when there was no YouTube or internet at all? Remember when we were sitting in front of our TVs listening exclusively to what others wanted you to listen to? Only seeing these perfect lives of stars and TV presenters, their beautiful dresses and fake smiles?
Luckily we have YouTube now where everyone can be real and unpolished and we can all choose what to watch and when to watch it, right?
Unfortunately a lot of people voluntarily choose to keep up these perfect fake personas even on YouTube and thereby throwing away YouTubes great potential, only because they get admired for it. Instead of changing things up, we – again – do the same mistakes others already did before us: Creating images that are unattainable for most people, in order to make them buy more and more to maybe someday, somehow be just as shiny as they are. That’s absolutely sickening!
You could argue now that it’s unfair to only point out the mistakes of one single person, whereas millions of other people are still promoting or supporting animal abuse every single day. The truth is, you cannot talk to everybody at the same time. You can try it, but the possibility of EVERYBODY hearing this message, is pretty low. If you want to bring a message across, you talk to the “big people”, people with influence, a huge following.
Cassey Ho is not the only one who had to listen to accusations. There are tons of other YouTubers and celebrities out there who have been openly addressed by activists and there’s nothing wrong about that.
If you have a message that is not only important to yourself, but for the survival of the whole planet, then you should speak up and everybody should be able to listen to that message. If we silence others, we end up silencing ourselves, by gradually destroying the freedom we have gained over thousands of years.
